Camping

We are the definition of the word "broke" for a little while and even the prices to tent camp at a campground are too steep for us at the moment. We decided to be squatters in our own yard. We've got out tent, fire pit, pool, playground and even Leroy as local wildlife. Buffalo temperatures are tolerable right now as opposed to the Midwest so we aren't frying.

Questions.

Bailey just asked me about Avery's drool-soaked shirt.  I explained Avery is teething again (after a long hiatus) and it is normal.  Bailey replied:

"Don't you think it's a bit excessive?"

I don't know what Bailey wants me to say to that. . .

Yes, I declare Avery's drooling and wet t shirt to be excessive.  Something must be done immediately.

I hate summer

I don't like hot weather.  Bailey is out of school and can get irritating when she is bored.  She is no different than any kid, but I think Bailey is so much easier to deal with when she is given a schedule.  I don't want to micromanage the entire summer, but I sat down with Bailey and gave her some ideas of some weekly activities that wouldn't cost us money every week.  Each week day, we came up with 2 things to do.  One thing is an "out of the house" thing and the other is a "nap time" activity.  Avery will be napping at nap time.

Since it is Wednesday, and our schedule HAD to begin the minute we wrote it down, she chose POOL for Thursdays so she can go to the pool tomorrow.

Out of the House:

Monday:  Playground
Tuesday:  Picnic
Wednesday:  Library (yes, after we wrote this schedule, we went directly to the library)
Thursday:  Pool
Friday:  Mall (this will end up costing us money, but frozen yogurt usually makes Bailey happy)

Naptime:

Monday:  Girl Scout badge work
Tuesday:  Board Game
Wednesday:  Wii
Thursday:  Read
Friday:  Catch/Sports

I tried to tell Bailey that this schedule is not written in stone and can be altered as needed, but I doubt she understood.  We know our Bailey and we love her, but changing plans is not in her DNA.

One Year Ago

Nick and I were running last night and spent a good chunk of the time trying to piece together what we were doing this week last year.  Avery was born, but where was Bailey the whole time?  I said I should write it all down and I did here.  I'm sure nobody will read this in it's entirety, but it is mostly to get it written down somewhere where I won't lose it.

Saturday 6/18/11- Bailey had a baseball game.  I usually went to at least 1/2 of each game, but my blood pressure was high and I couldn't be out for too long.  This Saturday, I couldn't get my blood pressure down to even attempt to go to the game.  I admitted to feeling pretty rotten and was not looking forward to 6 more weeks of feeling that bad.

Sunday 6/19/11-Nick, Bailey and I took a carry-out lunch to Goat Island at Niagara Falls and had a picnic.  I had Nick fetch the car not once, but twice because I was feeling really bad and didn't want to push it.

Monday 6/20/11- 4:30am woke up with a pain in the upper right quadrant of my belly.  Called the doctor on call and was instructed to see how I feel at 9am.
7:45am Send Bailey to school for her last full day.
8:00am Doctor changed her mind (weird) and asked me to get checked out at the hospital so I could get some bloodwork.  I didn't share the entire story with Nick and told him I was going to the doctor's office.  I didn't want him to worry.  Silly me.  Nick had conference calls all morning and was working from home.
Noon-Doctor comes to my hospital room and starts out with "I wish I had better news. . . ".  I had to call Nick and tell him I had HELLP Syndrome and was not getting out of the hospital.
3pm-Bailey gets out of school and Nick informs her she will not be seeing her mom for several days.
6pm-Nick drops Bailey off at baseball and finally gets to come see me at the hospital for one short hour.  I insisted that Bailey get to keep as normal a schedule as possible.  I would hold down the fort at the hospital and delegate from my phone.  Even though I was on magnesium by this time, I could shut my eyes and think clearly.  I was seeing double and my eyes were moving constantly.  Emailing and texting was hard.
9pm  Nick drops Bailey off at Joana's house for a sleepover.  This was a lifesaver.  I knew there were few houses in Buffalo Bailey would feel comfortable at, and this was one of them.  Thanks Joana!
10pm Nick comes to the hospital for the worst sleepover ever.  I couldn't sleep for a million reasons and I knew they were starting pitocin at 3am.

Tuesday 6/21/11 Today was much less hectic than Monday.  Joana took Bailey to school.  I was in labor all day.  I had one bad episode right after the epidural.  Luckily, it wasn't a seizure.  Bailey was picked up from school by our Guardian Angel #2 Veronica and she took Bailey swimming with her girls.  Avery was born and we called Bailey right away.  Bailey was way more excited about swimming and was not interested in talking.  Avery was immediately sent to another hospital because she was too small for the hospital I delivered in.  It really didn't bother me as much as I though it would.  Later that night (Bailey still was unable to come to see me) Bailey chose to miss her baseball game and visit Avery at the Children's Hospital downtown. That night there were horribly noisy storms and I was so worried for Bailey.  She slept with Nick that night.  I thought the magnesium was messing with my head and making the thunder/lightning sound worse than usual.

Wednesday 6/22/11  I was STILL on magnesium until the afternoon.  I hadn't gotten out of bed since I arrived at the hospital monday morning.  I reluctantly accepted a sponge bath from my nurse because I was feeling FUNKY. This was definitely the low point of the week.  I even called Kelly my Guardian Angel #3 to come visit me at 6am at the hospital after she worked all night long.  I was nauseous and hungry (no food since Monday morning) and dirty.  I couldn't see Bailey or Avery.  Luckily, by late in the afternoon, I was off of the magnesium and I was tentatively told I could leave on Thursday.  Bailey had her last 1/2 day of school.  Nick was home to send her to school and when she got home.  They both probably went to Children's Hospital to see Avery after school.  That night I was moved out of Labor and Delivery to the "mother and infant" side of the floor.  Bailey also got to come see me!

Thursday 6/23/11  I wanted to leave today.  It didn't happen because I had low calcium and my body was all twitchy and my face was contorted and the muscles in my hand/arms were all seized up.  It bummed me out, but I didn't want to go home like that either.  That calcium problem resolved itself by that afternoon and I was so excited to bust out of there on Friday.  I just had to wait and pump a lot.  I enjoyed seeing the babies everywhere but I also was a little jealous and sad I was stuck in the dumb hospital.  Nick left Bailey in my room while he went to see Avery downtown.  Things were getting a little more difficult.  Bailey didn't want to go see the baby and I quickly realized I was in no shape to supervise Bailey for too long.

Friday 6/24/11  I finally get discharged and we all head straight downtown to see Avery.  It was nice to see Avery all cuddled up in her isolette with the bili lights and her little baby sunglasses.  I briefly got to hold her but babies in isolettes are there for a reason, and the nurses don't want them out too much.  I was whipped so we hunt down a breast pump and go pick that up.  By this time I was beyond exhausted.  My blood pressure was still elevated and I was done for.  I remember the lady at the pump rental store trying to ask me questions about the baby and I was a zombie.

The next week was a complete blur.  Nick went to work.  I had lined up an entire week of people to watch Bailey while I could go to the hospital to deliver milk and say hey to Avery.  Bailey would get dropped off or picked up by her friends in the morning, I would head to the hospital for a few hours.  I would usually pump twice and see one baby feeding.  Then I would head home, pick up some dinner, pick up Bailey and continue pumping.  The NICU experience didn't bother me much.  I was so tired from pumping and recovering from my "syndrome", taking care of a newborn at home was the last thing I wanted to do.  Avery was sent home really quickly.  She came home at 4lbs and we were on our own!  I had a lot of blood pressure checks and she had a ton of lactation visits and weight checks.  We eventually settled into somewhat of a routine and we eventually started paying attention to Bailey again.  :)

Happy Birthday Avery!

We had a birthday party for Avery today.  She turns one on June 21st.  Avery's Cincinnati grandparents were in attendance along with Avery's baby friend Eden. Avery was a rotten little punk who refused to nap so group/family pictures were not happening.  We had a polka dot theme and hung a string of photos from the whole year on the wall.

I had a great time with the cake.  I made my own marshmallow fondant last week, I then colored, rolled and cut out the polka dots.  Then I baked and cooled the cakes and rolled out more white fondant and stuck on the dots.  I think it turned out really well.

Bailey was super great and worked soooo hard to learn a two-handed arrangement of  Happy Birthday to accompany our wonderful singing.

Click on the picture below to see all of our pictures from the party.

We are planning on a 2nd party for our Toledo family at the end of July which will be Avery's corrected birthday.

Flipping Adorable

I had Avery's pictures taken today.  They were to celebrate the fact that we brought her into this world and remembered to feed her every day for a whole year.  She is freaking cute.

And just because comparing babies is so much fun. . . Here is a picture of Bailey at one year.

Flag Day

Bailey and 2 other representatives from her Brownie Girl Scout troop.
Happy Flag Day!  Bailey's school has a nice little celebration where they sing some songs, discuss the flag and honor veterans.  Bailey's Grandpa Bill came to town a day early so he could attend.  Bailey was pretty excited she had a veteran to bring! They recognize each veteran in attendance, his branch of service and who brought him.
After a parade around the block all of the children enjoy a Popsicle.
Avery enjoying the band.

The entire school including the cute Kindergarteners in their awesome hats.
